Self-Care Tips for Women
September is a great time to review your self-care goals. The summer holidays are over and perhaps you indulged a little (or alot in my case, hello Italian gelato!), schools and work are back to a routine, and you are thinking of what is important to you. Now is a great time to focus on building in regular selfcare.
You can read more about the benefits of self care and 10 tips for building it into your life in my blog post: Self-Care is Self Love

What is Self-Care?
The practice of taking action to preserve or improve one’s own health. The practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress. Expressing oneself is an essential form of self-care.
Why is self-care important?
We often think of self-care as bubble baths and pampering, which of course is one important aspect. But self-care is more far reaching than that. With increasing rates of stress, anxiety, depression and burnout, taking proactive action to take care of your health is fundamental to our physical and emotional wellbeing and happiness. And taking that time to replenish yourself means you can show up being the best version of yourself.
5 Self-care Ideas for Women
Here are 5 self-care ideas on how to incorporate self-care into your life this September and all year round.
1. Rest
Make sure you plan to rest each day. Rest is different from sleep and is important to help us recharge. It’s not simply doing nothing, it can be relaxing rest time such as reading a book or active rest such as practicing yoga. Check out my blog post on the Benefits of Rest for more inspiration.
2. Include Joy
Choose activities that you enjoy, not because you feel you should do them or because everyone else is. If you hate the gym, dance around your living room instead. If meditation bores you, go for a walk. If journaling doesn’t speak to you. Take a photograph every day. Make sure that there is plenty of fun and do things that bring you joy.
3. Essential maintenance
Now that my son is in school, I’ve been scheduling my yearly checks. These appointments can easily slip when we are busy or when we put others first. Don’t forget to book in your essential maintenance- dentist, optician, gynecologist, etc.
4. No plans day
For many of us, life is extremely busy and it can feel that the days fly by and every minute has something booked in. So why not try having a no-plans day. Clear your schedule, don’t plan anything, the only thing you schedule in is downtime and relaxation.
5. Self compassion
After the last 18 months, levels of stress and burnout have dramatically increased and so in my opinion, the best self-care we can practice is to work on our inner self-talk and showing much more kindness and compassion towards ourselves. Tune in to your inner dialogue, what thoughts are you telling yourself? Then focus on repeating words of self-kindness.
