I’ve amassed a clutter debt! I have to be honest, I was so busy in December and January with travel, festive parties and Christmas that my house suffered and isn’t quite as tidy and organised as I like it to be. Add to that the massive amount of gifts that came in to our home over the past couple of months, the clutter has mounted up. And when my home is like this, every day tasks can take longer, I feel stressed and overwhelmed and I feel that a lot of my time and energy is spent on tidying and sorting instead of on family, relationships, work and fun.
Do you relate to any of this?
Is your clutter out of control?
Are you feeling overwhelmed about where to even begin?
You are not alone. We call this your clutter cost.
What Is Clutter Cost?
This is the impact clutter has on your life. Decluttering isn’t just about being tidy, there is well researched evidence as to why we need to reduce our clutter.
Financial Cost
-
- All those storage boxes and storage units cost you money to store your clutter. In the US, people renting storage units spend around $1000 per year on storing clutter! It’s a billion $ industry!
- People often misplace or forget bills and incur charges due to clutter.
- There are so many unused gift certificates that get lost in clutter. A huge waste of money. I recently read a statistic that in 2014 in the US that amount was $1 billion in unredeemed cards!
- Food goes unused and thrown away, again a huge waste of money.
- I can’t tell you how much money I have found when helping people declutter!Loose change and money in birthday cards mostly. Plus ovedue library books, recurring unused or forgotten subscriptions,
standing orders and direct debits, buying duplicates cause you can’t find the
original or have forgotten you own it…………….The list goes on.
Time Cost
We can spend up to an hour per day looking for things that are lost. That’s about 15 days per year lost looking for stuff! What could you achieve with that time? I had a client who spent 10 minutes every day looking for her house
keys. So we put a small bowl by her front door. The day after this small change she was 10 minutes early for work. She then used those extra minutes to eat a healthy breakfast. She then decided to build upon her healthy
morning and cycle to work. Such a small step resulted in a huge change. And a shift from a stressful start to the day to a positive and healthy start to the day.
Emotional Cost
My years of supporting people to declutter has shown me first hand the impact of clutter on our emotional health – depression, anxiety, stress, feeling overwhelmed, irritable, angry, tearful, low energy, poor motivation, lack of
concentration. For many people, clutter is ‘noise’ that affects our thinking, headspace and creativity.
So what is your clutter cost? How is clutter affecting your life? I truly believe that clutter detracts from the important things in life, that it prevents us from focusing on the things we ought to prioritise and prevents us from leading the
life we wish to lead.
So let’s work together and get you organised.
Join me on the 1 st february for my 28 day decluttering challenge. Based on the Minimalists Game, we will have lots of fun, keep each other accountable and get rid of at least 404 items! Sound a lot. A recent US study found the average American home has 300,000 items, in the Uk on average 27,000 items. So 400 is a drop in the ocean. There will be support from me, as well as lots of hints and tips. It’s a great way to kick start your decluttering and reduce your clutter cost.
You can also book an hour consultation with me. I’ve been supporting people with decluttering for 25 years so can give you advice and an action plan on how to tackle your clutter.
Or
Book a 4 hour decluttering session with me. I’ll come and physically work with you to declutter and organise your space. Whether its a messy cupboard, a wardrobe stuffed with clothes or a junk drawer that grows each month or
paperwork, an office space or a room that does not spark joy or calm, I can work with you to make dramatic change in a short space of time.
Email me to discuss an appointment, or book a FREE Discovery Call. I have limited spaces still available in February and March.
Together we can reduce your clutter cost and increase your happiness. See you in the challenge.
